I will show you how to change the AllTrails distance units in this guide. Switching from KM to Miles or Miles to KM is very easy. Check out the steps below to change the distance units in the app or the desktop website. You will find that these units of measurement are oftentimes referred to as Imperial or Metric. As an example, to switch in AllTrails km to miles you would be going from metric to imperial measurements.
Whats the difference between Metric and Imperial measurements?
Let’s keep this really simple. I will cover the basics of the Imperial and Metric system that apply to what we are changing in the AllTrails app. If you would like to get more in-depth about the measurement systems, check out the Wikipedia for Imperial and Metric.
Imperial
Imperial is a system of measurements based on units of inches, feet, yards, and miles. In the below screenshot, you can see that the distance is represented in miles and the elevation gain is represented by feet.

Metric
The metric is a system of measurements based on units of meters, centimeters, and kilometers. You can see in the screenshot below with this setting that the distance is represented in kilometers and the elevation is in meters.

Why change AllTrails distance units?
This setting is completely up to you and oftentimes set based on your geographical location. For me, when I travel I want to make sure that the units either match the distance unit I am familiar with or the units that will best match the trail signage to match my progress.

Change Distance Units AllTrails Mobile App
If you want to change the distance units on the mobile app it is just as easy, but it will take a few extra steps. Start by making sure you are logged into the AllTrails app. Then on the bottom right corner click on the “Profile” option.

After your profile is loaded, click on the gear icon in the top right sectoin of the screen.

From here we will tap on the “Units” setting.

Once opened, you can choose between Imperial or Metric in the AllTrails app. Once you have made your choice click the back arrow in the top left of the screen and your setting will be saved.

A Word of Caution
When planning your next hiking trip, make sure you fully understand the units of measurement that you are used to adventuring in. The last thing you want to do is go on a quick hike with a 1000m elevation gain, and realize that it’s actually over 3,000 feet in elevation. If you are not paying attention the difference between the measurement systems can sneak up on you and really change the expectation of a hike.
