Parking & Getting There

There is a lot of parking once you get to the lake. During the week parking should not be an issue. If you decide to go on a nice sunny weekend, you should plan on being one of the first to the lake, or plan for waiting on parking. This trail can get very busy. When I went I actually got lucky on a busy day and was able to pull right into a spot. As I unloaded my bicycle I realized that was not the case for everyone else.

The Trail

The trail is open from sunrise to sunset and closed on some holidays and the first Tuesday of each month. Up to date information can be found on the sandiego.gov website.

You are able to go fishing and ride boats in the lake. The lake even provides rentals for you to go out and enjoy. Please keep in mind these are permitted activities so even if you bring your own kayak you will need to get a permit. More information can be found on the Rocky Mountain Recreation website.

The trail is a loop so it is best to plan on doing the full loop or knowing when you want to turn around to head back. On the bicycle it was very enjoyable and did not take very long to complete. If I was looking for more distance could have easily added extra laps around the lake.

There is not much shade on the trail, so make sure that you bring sunscreen and water to have a safe trip around the lake. There is some signage at the beginning of the trail, but it’s hard to get lost since you are on a paved path that goes along the edge of the lake.

The pavement on the lake was in great condition. This makes it a great candidate for bringing a stroller with you. Now that I think of it, a great place to take some roller blades or roller skates as well.

Lookback

Overall I really enjoyed my bike ride around Lake Miramar Trail. It was a very casual ride with great views. Even though the parking was busy, the trail did not feel overcrowded.
